Helpful Hints for the Learner
Visual learner
§ Write
things down. Take notes in class and
review often.
§ Write
vocabulary words in language arts, science, social studies, etc. on index cards
with the definitions written on the back.

as much information as possible from graphs, pictures, and charts.
§ Use
a highlighter on your notes or text.
§ Ask
the teacher to repeat something if you don’t understand it.
§ Preview
a chapter before reading it by looking at the title, main headings, key terms
and summary.

look at the speaker to attend and understand the information better.
§ Sit
close to the front of the room if possible.
§ Study
alone rather than with a friend.
§ Study
in a quiet place with no interruptions.
If you play music, make it soft, background music.
§ Practice
visualizing or picturing important information
§ Use
index cards to mentally ‘see’ facts, learn chronological order, or sequential
order.
Auditory learner
§ Use
self-talk to stay focused on the assignment.
§ Say
information out loud while studying.
§ Use
rhymes to learn.
§ Use
tape recorder to replay lectures.
§ Tape
your own summary, study guides, and information and then listen to it.
§ Write
vocabulary words in language arts, science, social studies, etc. on index cards

Review by repeating the words and definitions aloud, and then checking
to see if you are correct.
§ Verbalize
things you want to remember such as dates, key terms, quotes, and important
events.
§ Read
aloud whenever possible or subvocalize quietly when reading silently in class.

oral reports when possible rather than written reports

with a friend so you can discuss, ask questions, answer, and hear the
information again.

Tactile learner
§ Take
frequent breaks while studying. Get a
drink of water or do some simple activity.
Try not to sit too long in one position.
§ Alternate
quiet times for studying with active break times.
§ While
in class, experiment with ways of moving your hands, legs, or feet without
disturbing the class. Bounce a foot off
the floor, roll a pencil between your fingers, squeeze a largerubber eraser,
doodle on a piece of paper, etc.
§ Write
vocabulary words in language arts, science, social studies, etc. on index cards

Review by walking around and reciting them.

frequent notes and write important facts several times while studying. Copy information to learn it.

positions frequently.
